On the 13th of August, Mumbai reported its first death due to the new variant of the Wuhan virus, the Delta Plus mutant.
According to sources, a 63 year old woman was infected with the new Delta Plus mutant and succumbed to the virus. However, the death of the woman took place on the 27th of July, a detailed report of her samples confirming she was infected with the new Delta plus variant came on the 13th of August. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) received her genome sequencing report and confirmed that she was infected with the Delta Plus variant.
It is to be noted, the woman who was fully vaccinated against the deadly Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) was diagnosed with the dangerous Delta plus variant on the 21st of July. After a week of treatment, she died on the 27th of July. The woman had no travel history and was not in touch with anyone infected.
As of now, six family members of the woman have also been infected with the COVID-19 infection. While two of the family members are infected with the Delta Plus variant, the reports of the remaining four members are awaited. A BMC official said, “The two are doing fine and the report of the rest of the four members is still awaited.”
With this new death, Maharashtra reported two deaths due to the Delta Plus variant, whereas it was the first death in Mumbai.
Meanwhile, the State has a total of 65 Delta Plus variant cases, including 11 from Mumbai.
