Rahul Gandhi, the former President of the Indian National Congress (INC) took a dig at the Central Government’s Central Vista Project.

The Central Vista Project is an initiative taken by the Central Government to refurbish the government buildings and infrastructure in New Delhi. The old Parliament complex was built under the rule of British Government pre independence. The foundation stone for the existing Parliament complex was laid on the 12th of February 1921.

After independence, it was under the leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) the Government of India (GoI,) initiated to construct a new Parliament. The new parliament and government buildings would have an additional space for visitors to meet representatives. The new building would also have a grand Constitution Hall to showcase India’s democratic heritage, a lounge for members of Parliament, a library, multiple committee rooms, dining areas and ample parking space.

Mr. Gandhi, on the 7th of May, took to Twitter and said, “Central Vista is criminal wastage.

Put people’s lives at the centre- not your blind arrogance to get a new house!”

Mr. Rahul Gandhi said, the Government of India (GoI) led by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is putting people’s lives at danger and going ahead with the project amid the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis. The statement by Rahul Gandhi came after the Central Government set a deadline for the redevelopment project of the Central Vista. The project envisages a new triangular Parliament building, a common Central Secretariat and the revamping of the three km long Rajpath from the Rashtrapati Bhavan to India Gate. The project also includes the residences for the Prime Minister of India and the Vice President.

The revised estimated cost of the Central Vista project is Rs. 13,450 crores from Rs. 11,794 crores.

Rahul Gandhi and his Party the INC also asked the Central Government to postpone their plan considering the current COVID 19 crisis.

The INC asked the GoI to give priority to improving the medical infrastructure during the COVID-19 pandemic, instead of spending money on the project. The Party also raised concern over the tag “essential services” given to the project.

It is to be noted, the work of the Central Vista Project was in continuation amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
