Union Civil Aviation Ministry Postpones International Flight Resumption Amid Omicron

Omicron, the new variant of the Wuhan virus, also known as the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19,) has become a matter of concern, globally. In the wake of this, the Indian Civil Aviation Ministry announced to reconsider the resumption of regular operations of International flights.

The DGCA issued a circular regarding the same and said, “…an appropriate decision indicating the effective date of resumption of scheduled commercial international passenger services shall be notified in due course.” Mr. Neeraj Kumar, the DGCA Director of Regulations and Information said, “In view of the evolving global scenario with the emergence of new variants of concern, the situation is being watched closely in consultation with all stakeholders and an appropriate decision indicating the effective date of the resumption of scheduled commercial international passenger services shall be notified in due course of time.”

Initially, the Union Government and the Civil Aviation Ministry announced they would resume regular international flight services from the 15th of December. The regular international flight services has been suspended since 2020 March, when the first lockdown was announced. Since the past 20 months, the services has been suspended and only Vande Bharat flights and air bubble services were allowed.

However, considering the current situation due to Omicron fear, the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said to take a decision and announce the same in the due course of time.

In addition, the DGCA said, the Civil Aviation Ministry and the concerned authorities are closely monitoring the global developments of Omicron.
