11 killed, 50 injured in stampede at temple in Jharkhand

Ranchi: As many as 11 people were killed and nearly 50 others were wounded in as stampede at a temple in Jharkhand in the wee hours of Monday. The incident took place at around 5am near a Durga temple at Belabagan in Deoghar district. The stampede occurred when the devotees tried jump the queue in order to get closer to the temple. The injured were immediately admitted to a hospital for treatment.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the incident. Modi tweeted, “Pained at loss of lives due to the stampede in Jharkhand. My thoughts & prayers are with the families of the deceased in this hour of grief.” He added, “I pray that the injured recover quickly. I spoke to CM Raghubar Das ji on the incident.”

Chief Minister of Jharkhand Raghubar Das also expressed grief over the loss of lives. The officials are supervising the incident and rescue operations.
