Yesterday, the Election Commission Of India recommended disqualifying 20 of Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party Legislators. The EC has asked President Kovind to disqualify these Legislators for allegedly holding offices of profit as Parliamentary Secretaries. A few hours after the news emerged Arvind Kejriwal took to Twitter to respond to the allegations.
Kejriwal said, “Hurdles do come when one walks on the path of truth and honesty. This is natural. But all the visible and invisible powers of the universe help you. God supports you because you don’t work for yourself but for the nation and the society.”
He further stated, “History is a witness that it is the truth that wins in the end.”
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee supported Kejriwal’s Party and said, “A Constitutional body cannot be used for political vendetta. The 20 AAP MLAs were not even given a hearing by the Hon EC. Most unfortunate. This goes against the principles of natural justice. At this hour we are strongly with @arvindkejriwal and his team.”
The Aam Aadmi Party will take this up with the judicial authorities and file an appeal on the matter. If the Office of the President clears this order from the Election Commission Arvind Kejriwal will be in trouble. His cabinet will drop to just 47 members from 67. The President’s decision is still awaited. But if the disqualification is a reality it will tarnish AAP’s name as the party came to power with promises of a corruption free governance.
