Hyderabad: Alleged Negligence At Niloufer Hospital, Infant Dies

A three month old baby died in Niloufer Hospital because of negligence by the doctors in Hyderabad. The baby was undergoing a blood transfusion at the hospital.

The family of the dead infant staged a protest outside the hospital and filed a police complaint.  The Nampally police recorded the complaint given by the infant’s father M. Mahesh.

The father said the baby was given O positive blood during a transfusion on the 15th of April. Further stating his child’s blood group was tested as A positive when the infant was admitted on the 6th of April.

The protest was getting tense and to control the situation a group of policemen was deployed to the hospital. Senior officials also visited the hospital to calm the enraged protestors.

The hospital Superintendent stated the child was suffering from Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH.) This led to complications and the infant developed an infection.

However, the doctors have explained the blood group in infants is not constant for the first six months. Surprisingly, this is not a cold hard fact and blood groups are constant from birth.

The Telangana Health Minister C. Laxman Reddy said, “The doctors did their best and provided treatment. However, because of the disease, Dhruvan was suffering from made him vulnerable to infections, chances of his survival had slimmed down.”

Minister Reddy also formed a committee to investigate and determine the exact reason for the infant’s death. The police registered a case under IPC Section 336 (Negligently Endangering Life or Safety of Others.)

However, this is not the first time Niloufer Hospital has been accused of negligence. Between the 28th of January and the 4th of February, five mothers died while undergoing C section surgery.

An inquiry committee found that substandard drugs were being administered to the women causing the maternal deaths. Haseeb Pharmaceuticals was held responsible and the case was diverted to the medicine supplier.
