Journalist Vinod Verma: Innocent or Guilty?

Former BBC editor Vinod Verma was arrested by the Chhattisgarh Police on allegations of blackmail and extortion. It has been revealed Verma has an obscene video of Chhattisgarh Public Works Department Minister Rajesh Kumar. The police have alleged the journalist was using the video to blackmail the politician.

Verma spoke to the media after arriving at the Ghaziabad district court and said he was being framed. The police are accusing Verma of copying the video on CDs and selling them. But Verma said, “The government of Chhattisgarh is not happy with me. I just have a pen drive and have nothing to do with a CD.”

The police are alleged to have found 500 CDs of the obscene video from the veteran journalist’s home in Indirapuram in Uttar Pradesh. Verma has been booked under Section 384 (extortion) and Section 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC.)

Raipur Inspector-General (IG) Pradeep Kumar said, “The investigation is underway. We can’t reveal the details but contents of the CD violate Section 67 of IT Act.”

Senior Superintendent of Police H.N. Singh explained a huge quality of CDs were recovered from the journalist’s house. He also stated the officials were scrutinizing the contents of the video for more information.

Although the police found nearly 500 CDs at Verma’s house, it is unclear if the CDs were planted or the journalist is guilty.

Chhattisgarh Congress chief Bhupesh Baghel made a valid point and questioned the police, “I have a copy of the CD. Will I become an accused? The government has taken an extraordinary interest in arresting the senior journalist within hours after the complaint was lodged. Why it is not showing similar interest in arresting in other matters?”
