Rahul Gandhi, the President of the Indian National Congress (INC,) on the 7th of March, announced the first list of candidates contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The INC released its first list of the 15 candidates who will represent the Party in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in the constituencies of Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat.

According to the list, Rahul Gandhi will contest in the Amethi constituency, whereas Sonia Gandhi, the Chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA,) will contest in Raebareli.

The first list of the INC ended the speculations about whether Priyanka Gandhi, the All Indian Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary in charge of Uttar Pradesh East, will be a part of the 2019 elections or not.

The list was finalised at the Central Election Committee meeting of the Party, headed by Rahul Gandhi.

Out of the 15 candidates, 11 candidates are selected for Uttar Pradesh and 4 for the Gujarat Lok Sabha elections.

The candidates selected for Gujarat are Raju Parmar (Ahmedabad West,) Bharatsinh M. Solanki (Anand,) Prashant Patel (Vadodara) and Ranjit Mohansinh Rathwa (Chhota Udaipur.)

The candidates contesting in Uttar Pradesh are Imran Masood (Saharanpur,) Salim Iqbal Shervani (Badaun,) Jitin Prasad (Dhaurahra,) Annu Tandon (Unnao,) Sonia Gandhi (Raebareli,) Rahul Gandhi (Amethi,) Salman Khurshid (Farrukhabad,) Rajaram Pal (Akbarpur,) Brij Lal Khabri (Jalau,) Nirmal Khatri (Faizabad) and R.P.N. Singh (Kushi Nagar.)

The INC will contest all the 80 seats in Uttar Pradesh and 26 seats in Gujarat, in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, scheduled between April and May 2019.

The major parties contesting the Lok Sabha elections are the INC and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP.)
