On the 1st of March, Tuesday, a citizen of India, studying Medical in Ukraine died amid the ongoing invasion fight between Russia and Ukraine.

The news of the student’s death was confirmed by the Union Government.  Mr. Arindam Bagchi, the Spokesperson of the Union Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) took to Twitter and said, “With profound sorrow we confirm that an Indian student lost his life in shelling in Kharkiv this morning.  The Ministry is in touch with his family.  We convey our deepest condolences to the family.”

The student identified as Naveen Shekharappa Gyanagoudar, 20 years old, hailed from Karnataka and was a fourth year medical student at the Kharkiv National Medical University. 

According to Sridhar Gopalakrishnan, hostel mate of Naveen, he was shot dead around 10:30 A.M., as per Ukrainian time today.  He was standing in the queue before a grocery shop when the Russian army fired at people.  Gopalkrishnan said, “We have no information about his body.  None of us was able to visit the hospital, probably where it is kept now.”  Furthermore, Sridhar Gopalakrishnan, who is currently taking shelter at Hostel bunkers, is waiting for information on his return to India.

On the other hand, upon hearing the demise of an Indian Student from Karnataka in Ukraine, Mr. Basavaraj Bommai, the Chief Minister of Karnataka,  expressed his condolences.  He also spoke to the parents of the student and ensured efforts to bring back Naveen’s body from Ukraine, for his final rites.

It is to be noted, the Central Government has launched Operation Ganga to bring back Indians and students stranded in Ukraine, amid the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine. As of now, approximately 20,000 Indians are stuck in Ukraine, of which 8,000 left the nation on the advisories of the Indian Embassy in Ukraine.
