Sister Nirmala passes away

Kolkata: Sister Nirmala, who succeeded Mother Teresa as the head of the Missionaries of Charity, passed away at the age of 81 on Tuesday morning. She was unwell for the past few days, according to an official of Missionaries of Charity.

On Wednesday, the body would be brought to Mother House and the last rites will be performed at 4 pm. The official also stated that those who want to pay their respect to her can come to Mother House.

Sister Nirmala was elected as the Superior General of the Missionaries of Charity, six months before the death of Mother Teresa. In 2009, Sister Mary Prema was elected to succeed Sister Nirmala.

On Twitter, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wrote, “Saddened at the passing of Sister Nirmala who headed Missionaries of Charity after Mother Teresa. Kolkata and the world will miss her.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condoled Sister Nirmala’s death and said, “Sister Nirmala’s life was devoted to service, caring for the poor & underprivileged. Saddened by her demise. May her soul rest in peace.”
