Amaravati: Former Chief Whip Gadikota Srikanth Reddy has publicly condemned the TDP-led coalition government for discontinuing the free crop insurance scheme, initially introduced by the YS Jagan administration to shield farmers from financial strain. Reddy emphasized that this scheme covered crop losses without any premium costs for farmers, which greatly eased their burdens, particularly during challenging seasons.
In his statement on Friday, Reddy highlighted that under the new TDP scheme, farmers are now required to pay premiums, placing additional financial pressure on them amid rising input costs. He described the free insurance program as a “lifeline” for farmers, especially during natural disasters like droughts and floods, and noted that it had been nationally recognized for its innovative approach.
Reddy further accused the TDP government of breaking promises to farmers, particularly regarding annual financial support and dissolving agricultural advisory councils that offered essential guidance. He urged the TDP administration to reinstate the free crop insurance scheme, emphasizing that imposing additional financial obligations only worsens the situation for farmers, who rely on government support to navigate crop uncertainties and remain financially secure.
