On Wednesday, the Uttar Pradesh police arrested a suspect involved in the attack against a Swiss couple on Sunday afternoon.

The two foreigners were walking down a street in Fatehpur Sikri 40 kms from Agra when a group of four men attacked them.

Quentin Jeremy Clerc and his girlfriend Marie Droz are from Switzerland and came on a tourist visa to India. The couple both aged 24 suffered severe injuries from the attack. Clerc fractured his skull and had a nerve damaged while Droz had a few broken bones.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj intervened and demanded the State Government file a report.

Swaraj has also asked a team from the ministry to get in touch with the couple who are being treated at a Delhi hospital.

A tourist operator said, “Such incidents will scare tourists away. As it is there is so much controversy around the Taj. Hopefully, Yogi ji would do something about it.”

Pradeep Kumar from Fatehpur Sikri police station reported the couple was walking down a train track when the locals attacked them.

The suspect arrested has been identified as Mukul the brother of the main accused.

The media reports suggest a group of four men were following the couple and tried taking selfies with Droz. A friendly encounter turned into a violent attack and the couple was rushed to a local health center.

Kumar said, “Initially they (the couple) did not want to file a complaint and the case was made out by the police on its own.”

The police are investigating the case and looking for the main accused.
