The leader of the Trinamool party, Mamata Banerjee has clearly stated she would rather lose her mobile connection but will not link her Aadhaar card.
On Wednesday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata was quoted saying, “Under no circumstances will I link my Aadhaar with my telephone number. If the authorities disconnect my phone, let them do it.”
The politician has urged everyone to follow her as it is a clear ploy to breach the citizen’s privacy.
The Aadhaar was made compulsory for Indians about a decade ago. The reason for the Aadhaar card was to plug leakages in the delivery of state benefits. But many are skeptical as the massive data collection process has the information of over a billion Indians and can be used for identity theft, security breaches and government surveillance.
Their suspicions were validated after nearly 21 Aadhaar leaks were reported this year.
Among the leaks, former Indian cricket captain M.S. Dhoni’s Aadhaar details were leaked by a government authorized Aadhaar enrolment center.
In April this year, the details of more than a million people in Jharkhand was leaked on the government website. The officials involved were unaware of how the data managed to get leaked.
