Approximately 245 farmers filed their nominations to contest the Lok Sabha elections from the Nizamabad constituency, against Kalvakuntla Kavitha.
K. Kavitha is the current Member of Parliament (MP) of Nizamabad in Telangana. Farmers who are disappointed with Kavitha took the decision and submitted their nomination papers to the Returning Officer (RO) of the constituency.
The reason behind the disappointment is the failure of the Telangana Government in bringing turmeric farming under the Minimum Support Price (MSP) and in forming a National Turmeric Board. The MSP would benefit the farmers of the district, as they could then get a good profit from turmeric agriculture.
This is not the first time the farmers are protesting against the Telangana Government. Previously, the farmers held protests and demanded turmeric be classified as a food crop.
Out of the 245 farmers, the RO rejected the nominations of approximately 12 farmers, whereas the rest of the farmers will contest against K. Kavitha.
Nizamabad is one of the constituencies where Kavitha would be contesting on a Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) ticket. There are high chances of the opposition parties using the issue against the TRS as a campaign strategy.
The issue can be predicted as a major setback for the K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) led TRS, the ruling Government of Telangana, ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
Telangana will contest for a total of 17 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, scheduled to be held on the 11th of April.
The major parties contesting the Lok Sabha elections in Telangana are the TRS, the Indian National Congress (INC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP.)
The results of the elections will be declared on the 23rd of May 2019.
