Microsoft to Lay Off 700 Jobs

In a stint to raise its skill set, Microsoft will be cutting down about 700 roles this week ahead of the quarterly earnings report of the company. These 700 are the part of the 2,850 jobs that were announced to be cut in June 2016.

While 700 seems to be a huge number, in fact it won’t affect the overall headcount of the tech Giant much with around 113,000 people serving under the brand. LinkedIn also shows almost 1,600 positions open for various departments. These cuts will also won’t be specific to any single group, but will be spread across the company’s worldwide offices and business units, including sales, marketing, human resources, engineering, finance and more.

Although Microsoft is looking at layoffs, these won’t be actual laying off of the people but of the roles in the company. The organization gives laid-off employees 60 days to find a new position internally and even offers two weeks’ pay for every 6 months of employment, according to an insider source.

Last September, Microsoft also closed down the online communication platform, Skype’s London offices. According to a statement made, it was the decision to unify some engineering positions, potentially putting at risk a number of globally focused Skype and Yammer roles. “We are deeply committed to doing everything we can to help those impacted through the process,” the statement read.

Under the organization CEO Satya Nadella, Microsoft has seen several rounds of layoffs including cutting down around 7,400 positions in its last fiscal year, mainly from the phone business and also its largest ever layoff in history of 18,000 jobs in 2014.

With Microsoft ready to look into launching its new version of Microsoft 10, the “Windows 10 Creator Update” and the layoff looming in the hundreds, we are waiting to see how this affects the company’s growth graph.
