On Monday, Telangana Chief Minister, K. Chandrasekhar Rao announced the launch of free education. In his statement he mentioned free schooling will be provided from KG to PG. Initially, 255 schools were to open this academic year but now 169 residential schools have been opened across the State.

KCR made the statement on the first day of the academic year for 2017-18. He took the opportunity to congratulate all the officials that were part of starting the residential schools. The main aim is to be able to impart quality education on the same level as the international standards for the SC/ST/BC and minority groups in Telangana.

The Chief Minister also tried to inspire the children by asking them to look up to Babasaheb Ambedkar and Mahatma Jyotirao Phule to make it big in life. The CM also reminded that he kept his election promise of educating underprivileged children for free from 2017 .
KCR also mentioned that when he came to power there were only 259 residential schools for the underprivileged. He went on to say that in the three years of forming the State, the government has managed to increase that number to 527 and hope to bring it to 786 in the future.

The Government will be spending an average of 1.25 lakh per year on each student. The schools will provide education, meals and boarding for the students until intermediate.

The 169 schools that have started have been divided, 119 are for BCs and 50 for minority groups. Officials have also reported that on June 15th, 50 more residential schools will begin and on June 19th, 21 schools will commence for minority groups. This academic year will also see 15 new ST women degree colleges functioning.
