According to reports, officials said on Wednesday a 6.9 magnitude earthquake hit Guatemala and Southern Mexico. This killed five and injured several others. It was followed by power cuts and homes turning into rubble.
The Institute of Seismology said the epicenter of the quake was in the department of San Marcos, which 156 km west of Guatemala city. Tremors were noted across the country, which included the capital and also the neighboring Mexico.
Initially, two deaths were reported and three people died later of coronarys caused by the quake. Rescue teams were helping those stuck under the debris in western Guatemala. Many homes were made of mud and straw in this Central American country, which thankfully restricted life loss.
Julio Sanchez, the spokesman for Institute of Seismology said a 5.6 magnitude aftershock was felt in Mexico minutes after the quake. Eleven people were treated for injuries in Chiapas, Mexico. Five schools and twenty houses were damaged in this quake according to the officials.
Guatemala has been declared a risk zone for tremors as it is placed on the Caribbean Cocos tectonic plates that converges with North America’s tectonic plates.
