The mastermind behind the Mumbai attacks, Hafiz Saeed has filed a petition to the United Nations asking to remove his name from the list of terrorists. Saeed who is the co founder of Lashkar e Taiba filed the petition through a law firm in Lahore while still under house arrest.
In December 2008, the UN listed Saeed as a global terrorist under the Security Council Resolution 1267. After the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai Saeed has been carrying a $10 million bounty on his head for his terror activities.
Last week, the Pakistani Government decided to free Saeed from under house after 297 days. His release was met with a global outcry. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs released a statement that read, “India, as indeed the entire International community, is outraged that a self confessed and a UN proscribed terrorist is being allowed to walk free and continue with his evil agenda.”
The United States also condemned his release calling for a re arrest and prosecution. A statement released by the White House read, “Saeed’s release, after Pakistan’s failure to prosecute or charge him, sends a deeply troubling message about Pakistan’s commitment to (combating) international terrorism and belies Pakistani claims that it will not provide sanctuary for terrorists on its soil.”
