On Friday, the Supreme Court will release the verdict for the appeals filed by death row convicts in the Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case. The parents of the Braveheart expressed that they are confident the court will not show leniency to the guilty.

Asha Devi, Nirbhaya’s mother said, “We have full faith in the judicial system and I am sure that the Supreme Court will announce death sentence in its verdict for the guilty. I am sure the Supreme Court will give justice to my daughter. This will set an example for the world.” Her father also expressed confidence in the court and that it will award death sentence to the convicts. He said, “They will be awarded death sentence. Leave Supreme Court, even God will not forgive such people.”

On March 27, the Apex Court reserved its verdict and put a hold on the appeals of the four convicts. Mukesh, Vinay, Pawan and Akshay appealed in the Court against conviction and death penalty that was awarded to them by the High Court on March 13, 2014. In the case that shocked the Nation, a bench of judges, Justice Dipak Misra, R. Bhanumathi and Ashok Chauhan will provide judgment today.

December 16, 2012, Nirbhaya, a 23 year paramedic was brutally raped and assaulted by six persons in Delhi in a moving bus. The girl and her male friend were thrown out of the bus after the incident. The girl died on December 29 at a hospital in Singapore.

The Delhi Police had appealed for capital punishment for the convicts. The Defence lawyer, however, argued that they should be shown leniency for their young age and poor economic and family background. The police also appealed to the Court that they should take into count the effect of crime committed by them, not only on the victim and her family but society as a whole.

The Court had reserved its judgment, which will be provided today.
