Sushma Swaraj, the Union Minister of External Affairs, came to the rescue of a 22 year old girl belonging to Hyderabad.
Zakiya Mirza was offered a job as beautician in Kuwait by a travel agent in Hyderabad, following which she moved to Kuwait, on the 23rd of January. However, she was later sent to work as a housemaid in Kuwait, which she refused to do.
Safiya Begum, Zakiya Mirza’s mother, appealed to Sushma Swaraj to rescue her daughter. She said, “My daughter protested being forced to work as a housemaid and has been cheated. Her employer demanded that she repay him Rs. 1 lakh as he had paid that amount to the agent who sent her to Kuwait. She was taken to Kuwait on a tourist visa.”
Amjed Ullah Khan, a social activist, informed the Indian Embassy in Kuwait about Zakiya’s situation.
The number and information about the travel agents in Hyderabad and Kuwait, who facilitated the process, were forwarded to Sushma Swaraj.
