Two men allegedly set a 20 year old woman on fire in Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh, on Sunday.
The woman was rushed to a nearby hospital. A doctor at the hospital said, she is 60 % burnt and in a critical condition.
According to the victim’s statement, she went to the Sitapur Police Station and tried to file a complaint against the two men who allegedly molested her, thrice. The police sent her away and denied to file any case.
The accused were identified as Rajesh and Ramu, two brothers who live in the same village where the woman lived and tried to molest her.
A case was registered under Sections 354 (Sexual Assault,) Section 307 (Attempt to murder,) Section 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means) and Section 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the accused.
Sujeet Pandey, a senior police officer of Lucknow Zone, said, “Two men set her on fire when she had stepped out to go to the toilet. Her face and the upper part of her body are burnt. On November 29, they tried to molest her according to her statement. She twice tried to file police complaint but was refused. Action has been taken against the cops for negligence of duty.”
Sujeet Pandey went to the hospital where the woman was admitted and spoke to her relatives. He assured her family that he will take action against the accused and the case will not be neglected any further.
An investigation was started and one of the accused was arrested. Two police officers and one Station House Officer (SHO) who denied to register the case were suspended.
