Ram Nath Kovind, the President of India, finalised the new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC,) on Monday.

According to sources in the Law Ministry, Sunil Arora, the current Election Commissioner, will be appointed as the CEC, after the retirement of Om Prakash Rawat (O.P. Rawat.)

Ram Nath Kovind cleared the application of Sunil Arora, who will take over as the CEC on the 2nd of December, a day after O.P. Rawat’s retirement. Sunil Arora will have a tenure of two and a half years.

Sunil Arora is a former IAS officer of the 1980 batch of the Rajasthan cadre. He was the Finance Minister, Textile Minister and was the joint secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation. He also held various other posts. He served as the secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the secretary of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. He was also the Chief Managing Director (CMD) of Indian Airlines as well.

Mr. Arora, after his retirement in April 2016, became a part of Prasar Bharati as an advisor and later, he became the Director General and CEO of the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs.

Sunil Arora’s name as the next CEC was cleared by the Centre and sent to Rashtrapati Bhawan. A formal announcement regarding his appointment is awaited.
