On April 5, a girl was born with a rare medical condition in Khajuraho of Madhya Pradesh. The girl born with heart outside her body, also known as Ectopia Cordis, is struggling with her life and has been shifted to AIIMS hospital for treatment. This is a situation that occurs as rarely as 8 in 10 lakh births.

Dr. R.S. Tripathi, Civil Surgeon of the district hospital, speaking to the PTI said, “The girl was born on April 5 at Khajuraho Health Centre in the district. She has a rare congenital medical condition called Ectopia Cordis (heart abnormally located either outside of the thorax.)” The father of the girl, Arvind Patel works as a security guard at the heritage site in Khajuraho.

After shifting three hospitals in Khajuraho Health Centre, Chattarpur and in Gwalior, the girl was referred to AIIMS. The doctors of AIIMS said that the surgery would cost around 25-30 Lakhs. This amount has been promised to the father by Ramesh Bhandari, the Collector of Chattarpur, who assured the father to help in every way possible.

The Collector speaking to media said, “The baby’s treatment would be carried out with financial assistance from the state governments Mukhyamantri Bal Hriday Upchar Yojana (CMs Child Heart Treatment Scheme).” This is a second case reported in Khajuraho in the last decade. In 2011 a similar case was reported in Chattarpur in the same hospital.
