Amaravati: The Andhra Pradesh High Court has issued an interim order halting the allotment of seats under the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) quota in medical colleges. This decision came after a hearing on Tuesday, following a petition filed by medical students challenging the state’s decision to allocate EWS seats without increasing the total number of available seats in private medical colleges.
The petitioners’ counsel, Thakur, argued that the government’s move to allocate EWS seats without expanding the total number of seats would disadvantage open category students, potentially reducing their opportunities. The court found merit in this argument and agreed that the current approach could lead to inequities in seat distribution.
The bench issued an interim order restraining the implementation of the government’s directive (G.O.) on EWS quota allotments. The court has adjourned the further hearing on the matter for six weeks.
