Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) general meeting witnessed high drama as tensions escalated between Congress and Bharat corporators during the budget approval session. The Bharasa party demanded that public issues be discussed before approving the budget, leading to heated arguments.
Amid the uproar, four Bharat corporators were removed by marshals and later detained by the police. In protest, their colleagues surrounded the mayor’s podium, demanding their release and a discussion on civic issues. Despite assurances from the mayor, Bharat corporators continued to insist on their demands, prompting her to order the return of the removed members. However, when they refused to enter, the mayor suspended all Bharat corporators, leading to further protests outside the GHMC office.
The GHMC general meeting, convened to approve the 2025-26 budget, ultimately proceeded without discussion. Mayor Vijayalakshmi presented and passed a budget of ₹8,440 crore. The council also paid tribute to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and industrialist Ratan Tata.
Meanwhile, BJP corporators staged a protest outside the GHMC office, opposing the demolition of Goshamahal Stadium and demanding an alternative site for Osmania Hospital. Heavy security was deployed at GHMC headquarters.
