Vijayawada: Union Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu announced in Parliament that the construction of the Vijayawada International Terminal will be completed by June 2025. The Minister was responding to a question from Machilipatnam MP Balashauri in the Lok Sabha.
Balashauri emphasized the need to enhance connectivity from Andhra Pradesh to major cities across India. He urged for an increase in both new services and existing routes. Minister Rammohan Naidu assured that service expansions will be guided by demand and market conditions, with airlines making decisions accordingly.
The Vijayawada airport expansion project commenced in June 2020 with an initial budget of ₹611 crores. However, the works faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and issues such as the non-availability of necessary construction materials like sand. Minister Naidu stated that despite these challenges, the project aims for completion by mid-2025.
He highlighted the significant growth in civil aviation infrastructure over the past decade, noting a shift in demand from rail to air travel. The Minister also mentioned that many MPs are advocating for airport developments in their respective constituencies, reflecting the rising importance of the aviation sector.
