Bengaluru: A farmer in Bengaluru was denied entry into a mall along with his sons because he was wearing a dhoti, a traditional Indian garment. This incident sparked outrage online and protests by farmer associations.
The incident occurred at the GT Mall in Bengaluru on Tuesday. The farmer and his sons were reportedly there to watch a movie. Security personnel stopped the farmer, citing his attire as the reason for denying entry. They suggested he return wearing pants.
A video of the incident quickly went viral, igniting anger amongst netizens towards the mall’s management. Farmer associations responded with a protest on Wednesday morning, demanding an apology from the mall management and action against the security staff. They threatened a larger protest with more farmers if their demands were not met.
The mall’s security staff eventually apologized to the farmer and his son. This is not the first time clothing has caused controversy in Bengaluru. Recently, another farmer was denied entry onto a metro train because of his clothes being considered “untidy.” After the video of that incident went viral, authorities responded with an apology.
