Amaravati: The Andhra Pradesh High Court expressed strong disapproval over the police’s handling of cases, questioning their selective action and lack of adherence to legal procedures. The court remarked that public trust in the system is eroding due to the arbitrary actions of certain officers and criticized the trend of filing cases to suppress criticism of the government.
The court’s comments came while hearing a habeas corpus petition related to the arrest of YSRCP leader Koritipati Premkumar from Guntur. Premkumar was detained for posting a satirical video on social media, mocking the government’s policy on toll gates and making comments on Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan, and Minister Nara Lokesh. The Kurnool Third Town Police booked him under extortion charges following a complaint by Kurnool ITDP President Tilak.
Expressing displeasure, the High Court questioned the urgency shown by the police in this case, demanding a record of how many cases were resolved with similar “lightning speed.” The court directed the CID to submit fresh details and advised the removal of the investigating officer if necessary. The next hearing is scheduled for April 8.
The ruling came from a bench comprising Justices R. Raghunandan Rao and K. Manmatha Rao, who warned police against assuming that judges are unaware of ground realities.
