Justice Sanjiv Khanna Takes Oath as 51st Chief Justice of India

Delhi: Justice Sanjiv Khanna officially assumed office as the 51st Chief Justice of India (CJI) on Monday. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, attended by Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, and other dignitaries. Justice Khanna succeeded Justice DY Chandrachud, who concluded his tenure on Sunday. Justice Khanna will serve as CJI until May 13, 2024.

Appointed to the Supreme Court in January 2019, Justice Khanna has authored 117 judgments and contributed as a member in 456 rulings over six years. His judicial record includes landmark decisions upholding the use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and significant rulings related to the electoral bond scheme and the constitutional validity of Article 370. His tenure also included notable decisions in cases such as granting bail to former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the Delhi liquor policy scam.

Justice Khanna’s appointment as CJI is expected to steer the Supreme Court through several high-profile cases, with his judicial acumen recognized across the legal community.
