Chennai: Makkal Needi Maiyam (MNM) president and renowned actor Kamal Haasan is likely to be nominated to the Rajya Sabha soon. Local media reports suggest that the DMK is considering nominating Haasan, with state minister PK Shekhar Babu visiting the actor’s residence on Wednesday to discuss the matter.
MNM, part of the Opposition India Alliance, had previously campaigned in 39 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu and one seat in Puducherry during the 2024 general elections. In return, the DMK-led alliance had promised a Rajya Sabha seat to MNM for the 2025 Upper House elections.
As six Rajya Sabha seats will become vacant by June 2025, Shekhar Babu’s visit has brought the promise into focus. The meeting, for which MNM released photos, suggests that discussions on Haasan’s nomination were underway.
In response to the speculation, MNM spokesperson Murali Appas confirmed that the party would likely receive a Rajya Sabha seat, but emphasized that Kamal Haasan and the party’s leadership would decide who will represent MNM in the Upper House.
