Delhi: An intriguing anecdote about former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has come to light, showcasing his humility and lasting bond with Assam. Between 1991 and 2019, Dr. Singh rented a modest double-bedroom house in Nandana Nagar, Guwahati, paying just ₹700 per month, even while serving as the nation’s Prime Minister.
This rented house belonged to Hiteshwar Saikia, the then Chief Minister of Assam. When Dr. Singh was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Assam in 1991, he rented the house to establish his address in the state. Despite holding prestigious roles, including Finance Minister and Prime Minister, he never abandoned the humble arrangement, maintaining it for 28 years.
Saikia’s widow fondly recalls Dr. Singh’s simplicity and punctuality. “He never missed paying rent, even after becoming Prime Minister. Once, when we didn’t cash a check, he sent a new one with a polite note requesting us to deposit it.”
Dr. Singh’s connection with Assam extended beyond the rented house. Though initially an outsider, he championed many development projects for the northeastern state during his tenure, fostering a strong bond with its people.
This story stands as a testament to Dr. Singh’s humility, discipline, and enduring gratitude toward Assam.
