After Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, on Wednesday, also waved a goodbye to farm loans.
Ashok Gehlot, the Chief Minister of Rajasthan, waived off a total loan amount of Rs. 18,000 crores, for 30 lakh farmers in the State.
Mr. Gehlot had a meeting at the Secretariat, with D.B. Gupta, the Chief Secretary, finance officials and agriculture and cooperative departments, to discuss about waiving off those farmers’ loans whose loan amount is up to Rs. 2 lakhs.
According to the officials, the loan waiver scheme will be applicable to those farmers who took a debt from a nationalised, commercial or rural bank before the 30th of November, 2018.
Mr. Gehlot said, “There will be no monetary ceiling for the cooperative loans, though the cut-off date will be applicable to them [as well.]” Speaking about the Rajasthan manifesto, Mr. Gehlot stated, “We also included this promise in our manifesto for the Rajasthan Assembly election. It was all the more needed in our State, where debt ridden farmers were committing suicide because of the flawed policies of the previous government.”
Rahul Gandhi, the Congress President, kept up the promise he made during the campaigns for the recently conducted Assembly elections in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. He promised the public the Government would waive off farmers’ loans within 10 days of the formation of the Government in the States, which was implemented within 2 days.
After the official announcement, Mr. Gandhi took to Twitter and said, “It’s done.”
