Vijayawada: A devastating landslide in the Mogalrajapuram hill area of Vijayawada on Saturday morning claimed the lives of five individuals, leaving three families in mourning. The victims were identified as Navud Meghna (25), Polam Lakshmi (49), Purkati Lalu (38), Santosh (30), and Jampana Annapurna (55).
The landslide struck the Sunnabattila quarry area, destroying three houses and killing three people on the spot. Another victim succumbed to injuries en route to Vijayawada Government Hospital, while four others sustained critical injuries.
Rescue operations were swiftly initiated under the leadership of Vijayawada Central Zone ACP Damodar Rao, who successfully saved two individuals trapped beneath the debris. The state government responded by announcing an ex-gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh to the families of the deceased.
District Collector G Srujana and Special CS Revenue RP Sisodia inspected the site and oversaw the evacuation of nearby houses as a precautionary measure.
