Washington: US President Donald Trump has called for significant tariff reductions from India ahead of the April 2 deadline for his administration’s final decision on trade tariffs. Speaking on the matter, Trump expressed expectations of a major tariff cut by India before what he terms “Liberation Day.”

Trump emphasized that many nations that have imposed high tariffs on American goods are now lowering them, citing the EU’s 2.5% tariff reduction as an example. He suggested that India is also expected to reduce tariffs on American products significantly. From April 3, the US will enforce a 25% duty on vehicles and auto parts, a move aimed at countering unfair trade practices.

Earlier, White House Press Secretary Carolyn Leavitt criticized India’s high tariffs, claiming that some American products face up to 100% tariffs in India, making exports unviable. The US argues that India’s average tariff on US goods stands at 7.7%, while American tariffs on Indian exports are just 2.8%. If the US imposes reciprocal tariffs, the rate could increase by 4.9%. Agricultural products may see a 32.4% hike, while industrial goods could face a 3.3% increase.

This decision could have major trade implications for both nations, with industries closely monitoring the developments.
