Washington, D.C: Former U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that he still shares a good relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, despite growing tensions between Pyongyang and Washington. Speaking after a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump responded to a reporter’s question about mending ties with North Korea, saying, “I have a good relationship with Kim Jong Un. Let’s see what happens. But Kim is definitely a nuclear power.”
Trump also addressed the global nuclear weapons issue, mentioning Russia, China, India, and Pakistan. He emphasized that reducing nuclear arsenals would be a major achievement, though he acknowledged Kim’s significant stockpile.
During his presidency, Trump took an unconventional approach toward North Korea, holding historic meetings with Kim, including the 2019 Vietnam summit, which ultimately collapsed over denuclearization disagreements. Relations further deteriorated under President Joe Biden, as North Korea adopted a more aggressive stance, rejecting personal diplomacy with Trump.
Meanwhile, South Korea-US military drills and North Korea’s missile tests continue to escalate tensions in the Korean Peninsula. Recently, Kim’s sister, Kim Yo Jong, issued a warning to Washington, condemning the deployment of an American aircraft carrier in Busan.
