Smt. Smita Sabharwal, Additional Secretary to Chief Minister of Telangana is a 2001 batch IAS officer.

Smita, a Bengali, born on 19th June 1977, has done most of her schooling in various parts of the country. Her father, a retired Army officer, Colonel P. K. Das, served in the Indian Army. The last couple of years of school education was from St. Ann’s, Marredpally. She later graduated in Commerce from St. Francis Degree College. She is one of the youngest to have cracked the Union Public Service Commission exam securing All India 4th rank and opted for the IAS.

“I had taken the commerce stream with accounts and economics as subjects. I was actually angry with my parents for pushing me into this stream. But it was a surprise when I bagged the first rank in the all India ICSE Class 12 exams,” adds the Joint Collector of Hyderabad.

Personal Biography
Smita Sabharwal was born on June 19, 1977.
Her father served in the defense department. Though, she never wanted to enter civil services till graduation, her father’s encouragement inspired her to join civil services.
Her mother tongue is Bengali and she speaks English as well.
Smita represented Karnataka in the Under-16 Badminton category and participated in athletic championship.
Dosa, Idli and Sambar are some of her favorite foods. She learnt Hindustani music.

Education
Smita Sabharwal did her graduation at St. Francis College in Hyderabad. She was an active NSS volunteer.
She has a degree in Business Law Accountancy Marketing, which she passed in first division.
After completing the tough administrative training in Lal Bahadur Sastry, National Academy of Administration, Mussoorie, she was trained in Adilabad district in her probationary days. Initial posting was in Chitoor where she served as the Subcollector, Madanapalle and was groomed well, letting her grab hands-on experience.

Thereafter she has worked in Rural Development sector as Project Director, DRDA, Kadapa. During her next stint as Muncipal Commissioner, Warangal she introduced “Fund your City” scheme where a large number of public utilities such as Traffic Junctions, Foot-overbridges, Bus-stops, Parks were created with Public-Private partnership(PPP).

Later she has served as Deputy Commissioner, Commercial Taxes, Visakhapatnam, and also as Joint Collector of Kurnool and Joint collector of Hyderabad. In April,2011 she took charge as District Collector, Karimnagar district where she has made significant contribution in the Health and Education sector. Also with the help of Public Representatives, Karimnagar Town underwent a facelift in the form of wider roads, scientifically planned traffic junctions, Bus-stops, Toilets and other public utilities.

Karimnagar district was awarded the best district in PM’s 20 Point Programme for 2012-2013. She worked as District Collector of Medak during the General Elections – 2014 and introduced an innovative programme to increase voting percentage – “Voter Panduga”. Currently she is holding the charge of Additional Secretary to Chief Minister of Telangana.




Smita Sabharwal, is an Indian Administrative Service Officer of 2001 batch borne to the Telangana cadre. She is popularly known as “Peoples Officer”.She is the first lady IAS officer to be appointed to the Chief Minister’s Office.
