Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy raised critical concerns about the potential impact of population-based redistribution of Lok Sabha constituencies, warning that it could result in fewer seats for the southern states. Speaking at the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting held in Belagavi, Karnataka, on Thursday, Revanth Reddy emphasized the need for the All India Congress Committee (AICC) to think strategically and take proactive steps in response to this issue.
Reddy’s proposal to include a caste census in the upcoming nationwide census was unanimously approved by the CWC. He stated that the redistribution of constituencies, if based solely on population, could lead to a reduction of seats for southern states, which are already seeing slower population growth compared to other regions. Furthermore, Reddy expressed concerns about the BJP’s handling of the Women’s Reservation Bill, urging AICC to be vigilant against any moves that could benefit the ruling party politically.
In his speech, Reddy highlighted Telangana’s role as a trailblazer for the nation by initiating its own caste census. He noted that the state’s caste survey was already 90% complete, with a comprehensive questionnaire developed to include all sectors of society.
PCC President Mahesh Kumar Goud also voiced strong support for the caste census, condemning the BJP’s alleged political maneuvering in the name of caste. He stated that if the caste census were carried out according to Rahul Gandhi’s vision, it could lead to revolutionary changes across India. Goud also praised the Telangana government’s aggressive approach to the caste census, calling it a significant step for social justice.
The CWC members, including Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka and other key leaders, expressed their congratulations to Revanth Reddy and Mahesh Kumar Goud for their leadership on this crucial issue.
