Mamata Banerjee and Sonia Gandhi Hold Meeting About Presidential Election: Mamata Banerjee, the West Bengal CM and Sonia Gandhi, the Indian National Congress Chief held a meeting on Tuesday. According to reports, the latter discussed the possibility of supporting a joint candidate in the upcoming Presidential Elections. Though no name was decided upon in the meeting, Mamata said that there was a need for consensus among the both parties.

After the 40 minute meeting with the president of Congress at her residence, Mamata addressed the media. She said, “We want the entire opposition to get together and come out with a consensus candidate who will be good for the country.” The meeting also had Rahul Gandhi, the Vice President of the Congress Party.

Mamata also added, “There are so many political equations. We will talk together, we will discuss together. We will prefer a consensus candidate who will work for the country and will be a better candidate for the country.” This meeting was one of the series meetings that Sonia Gandhi held with different parties to decide upon a candidate.

Banerjee added that if needed, the opposition’s wish could be implemented and differences are set aside. She said, “There is still time and we will meet again. But the government should also take the initiative for a consensus candidate.” The Trinamool Congress leader also said that she would not go into the details of the discussion and said an ideological fight would be through politics.

Speaking about the BJP she said, “In a democracy, it is not right to jail or book opponents by lodging false cases and using investigative agencies such as the CBI against them.” She also criticized the government for taking, what she called, a vendetta against rival political parties.
