On Friday, two police complaints were lodged on Azam Khan, a senior Samajwadi Party leader, after he made controversial statements about the Indian Army. The two separate complaints were lodged at Gautampalli and Hazratganj Police Stations.
These remarks sparked protests across Uttar Pradesh on Friday. The Hindu Jagran Morcha workers in Sambhal set fire to Khan’s effigy and demanded he should be tried by the court for treason. Similar kind of protests were held at Jaunpur, Chandausi, Lakhimpur Kheri and Chandausi.
On June 27, Khan addressing party activists in Rampur referred to the Army and said that they carried out “shameful violent incidents” in places such as Kashmir, Tripura, Jharkhand and West Bengal.
Khan also added excesses by security forces in these areas have led to “women in some places chopping off the private parts of Army men”.
The Bharatiya Janata Party lashed out at the SP leader over these remarks. They demanded Khan’s party to “sack” him for trying to “divide the country” on basis of religion and castes.
