The Indian National Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, is likely to take over as the chief of party in October this year. This decision comes ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha general elections.

Congress Working Committee (CWC,) said Rahul would be taking the reins on October 15 which puts an end to all speculations about his elevation. In a statement of CWC, Sonia Gandhi said that “In a few weeks, we will be electing the President and the Vice President of our Republic. In times such as these, it is even more essential that those who occupy this August office protect the Constitution.”

Reports state that over 32 CWC members have voted for Rahul to take the position of the chief. In 2013, Rahul Gandhi took over as the vice president of INC and has been in charge of the party. Termed as a youth leader, the 46 yeal old has been an active member of party affairs, public rallies and also heading meetings. However, reports state that he is reluctant in taking up his mother’s role.

Sonia Gandhi, the present Congress chief has been ill over the past few months. With Rahul’s elevation as the chief, Sonia will be retiring from her 18 year political journey. Amidst this, Congress is also trying to unite all the opposition parties to face Bharatiya Janata Party in 2019 general elections, owing to their poor performance in the 2016 Assembly elections.
