Sushma Swaraj Undergoing Dialysis Treatment for Kidney Failure

DELHI: It is no foreign concept that the external affairs minister of this country is an active one-woman army on social media, especially Twitter. Sushma Swaraj has helped many a citizens on various occasions and it is natural, yet pleasing, that she took to twitter again but this time to announce her reason for hospitalization.

Swaraj had been admitted in to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) last Monday, i.e., 7th November 2016. A team of top-notch doctors, which includes the likes of Dr Sandip Mahajan, professor (Nephrology), Nikhil Tandon, HOD (Endocrinology), Dr Randeep Guleria, HOD (Pulmonary Medicine) and Balram Airan, Chief of the Cardio Thoracic Centre, are on-call for the duty. The reason behind her hospitalization was known to us yesterday when she tweeted about it saying “Friends: This is to update you on my health.” “I am in AIIMS because of kidney failure. Presently, I am on dialysis. I am undergoing tests for a kidney transplant. Lord Krishna will bless.

A donor for another kidney is being searched for vehemently and the transplant operation is on hold. “Since a donor from her immediate family is not available right now, the kidney transplant might take some more time. The search for a suitable donor is on. Meanwhile, she is on maintenance dialysis (as and when required),” said officials from the institute.

Sushma Swaraj is known to be a diabetic and she has been in and out of the hospitals for treatments before too. She was admitted to the hospital early in the year on April 25th when she was treated for fever and chest congestion, with features of pneumonia, at a private ward.

The resulting waves of tweets that we saw though after she tweeted about her health conditions were all sympathetic and appreciating. Many were impressed at her transparency in a day when politicians flee to New York or other places to get themselves treated away from the media glare. One followers of Swaraj went to the length to offer his own kidney if needed. It is really warming to see people so staunchly support her in times of need.

Even other politicians, from other parties as well, like Rahul Gandhi, Arvind Kejriwal, Omar Abdullah, etc. reached out to show their sympathies. Although Swaraj has been discharged for now, she will be back again into the hospital soon for further treatment and dialysis. We wish that Sushma Swaraj a speedy recovery.
