A group of students from Banaras Hindu University placed a complaint against a play glorifying Nathuram Godse. Nathuram was the man who assassinated Mahatma Gandhi.
The play was performed at the three day cultural festival by the BHU’s Faculty of Arts. A video of the play went viral on the internet and a few students took offense and placed a complaint.
In the video the students are seen cheering as the student portraying Godse says he assassinated Gandhi. The BHU students complained at the district administration and demanded strict action against those involved in “showing Godse as a hero and justifying Gandhi’s assassination.
The students wrote a letter stating the play was a conspiracy to tarnish Gandhi’s legacy. They further pointed out Gandhi laid the foundation for their University. The letter reads, “He laid the foundation for the idea of Satyagraha and enjoyed a good bond with the founder of BHU Madan Mohan Malviya. That Gandhi was insulted in BHU while Godse was eulogized. Yeh rashtradroh se kam nahi (this equals to sedition.)”
Chief Proctor Royana Singh confirmed he received the letter and said it was sent to the police. He further added the complaint will be looked into and the allegations of sedition will be probed.
