Guntur: Renowned cardiologist Dr. Somaraju has cautioned against attempts to reduce fat without proper awareness, warning that such efforts could lead to serious health issues. Speaking at the valedictory session of the 66th State Annual Conference of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), he delivered the prestigious Dr. N. Apparao Memorial Lecture.

“Fat is not the enemy of our body. Excessively low cholesterol levels can disrupt brain function, leading to problems such as forgetfulness, bone loss, weakened immunity, and chronic pain. It’s essential to maintain a balanced fat intake, as extreme measures can harm overall health,” Dr. Somaraju emphasized. He also advised weekly fasting as an effective practice for maintaining health, noting that 80% of health issues stem from dietary choices.

He criticized the over-reliance on technology in healthcare, stating that blood pressure should ideally be measured by a doctor rather than hospital staff. “Neglecting diastolic pressure leads to significant patient suffering. Digital tools cannot replace the importance of patient-doctor interaction. Listening to patients is a skill that should not be overlooked,” he added.

Dr. Somaraju also highlighted the poor life expectancy among medical professionals, urging doctors to prioritize their own health. The session concluded with Dr. Somaraju being honored by IMA leaders, including state president Nandakishore and city branch president Subbarayudu.
