Amaravati: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has reaffirmed its commitment to punishing anyone who disrupts the election process. This statement follows the arrest of Pinnelli Ramakrishna Reddy, the former legislator of Macharla, after the AP High Court dismissed his anticipatory bail petition related to the vandalism of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).
The ECI emphasized that such actions would not be tolerated, highlighting the importance of maintaining peaceful elections as per the constitution. The arrest of Reddy serves as a reminder that no one is above the law, regardless of their status, and underscores the ECI’s dedication to protecting the integrity of the electoral process.
On May 13th, during elections in Andhra Pradesh, Reddy allegedly vandalized EVMs at the Palwai Gate polling station. The ECI viewed this act as a severe attack on the democratic process, as tampering with EVMs undermines the fairness of elections and can disenfranchise voters.
Following a thorough examination of video footage, the ECI ordered Reddy’s arrest on May 21st. Despite seeking anticipatory bail from the AP High Court, his petition was dismissed, leading to his imminent arrest. The ECI’s decisive action aims to deter similar offenses and ensure the integrity of future elections.
