Firecrackers may give temporary joy but it has very harmful impact as well. Fire is responsible for a lot of damage and the careless use of firecrackers during Diwali landed 6 people in the Sarojini Devi Eye hospital with severe eye injuries. It has been reported that 30 more cases with burns near the eyes are being treated at the hospital.
“The six patients are very critical. They have been admitted as there is damage to their eye-balls. They require further evaluation in terms of scans and tests.” said a worried Dr. Atul Gupta, who is a senior ophthalmologist. Three of the six are children who were injured when the crackers went off close to their face.
“The flames went into his eyes and burnt the skin and the pupils,” stated the mother of the 11 year old Sandeep from Hashmatpeth. She said her son was going to light a cracker when another cracker close by exploded suddenly.
The two adult cases are of men whose eye balls were damaged severely, a senior doctor said, “We are not sure whether their eye sight will be restored but it is too early to conclude.”
The hospital has a dedicated team to deal with injuries during Diwali.
