Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the urgent need for swift justice in cases of crimes against women and children during the National Conference on District Judiciary on Saturday. Modi’s remarks come in the wake of a high-profile murder case involving a resident doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, which has heightened political and public scrutiny.

Modi underscored that despite existing laws designed to protect women, including the Fast Track Court Act of 2019 and the establishment of witness protection centers, there is a pressing need for more effective district monitoring and faster verdicts. “The current legal framework is in place, but we must enhance our enforcement and ensure that perpetrators are punished swiftly,” Modi stated. He reiterated that addressing crimes against women remains a critical concern and part of the broader vision of a developed and equitable India.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee recently called for stronger laws following the Kolkata murder incident. The central government has responded, suggesting that while existing laws are adequate, their rigorous implementation is crucial.

President Draupadi Murmu also voiced deep concern over the incident, urging societal introspection to address the root causes of rising crimes against women.
