Yesterday, an Indian Air Force (IAF) Official said a Senior IAF Officer was arrested for allegedly sharing classified information with civilians. The arrested official is a Group Captain (a rank equivalent to an Army Colonel) at the IAF Headquarters in Delhi. An unnamed official said the accused is in IAF’s custody and is being questioned.
An Official said, “The IAF Central Security and Investigation Team discovered that the officer was indulging in certain unwanted activities through unauthorised electronic devices.”
The accused’s action came to light during counterintelligence surveillance carried out by the IAF’s Central Security and Investigation Team. The accused is suspected to have shared classified information with a woman over WhatsApp. The officials suspect a possible involvement of another personnel. They are further trying to understand the extent to which the classified data has been leaked.
Regarding the use of social media, there are very strict guidelines in the Armed Forces. The guidelines restrict soldiers from sharing their identity, rank, posting and other professional details. They are not allowed to post photographs that show them wearing uniforms.
