Telangana Intellectual Property Crime Unit Launched

Hyderabad: Telangana became the first state in the country to launch an exclusive unit, Telangana Intellectual Property Crime Unit (TIPCU). The special cell will handle the piracy and theft of the intellectual property. The government of Telangana has initiated the set up of a specialized copyright enforcement crime unit to address the rising threat of online film piracy.

The TIPCU will be attached to the cyber crime unit and will be headed by an officer of assistant police commissioner cadre. The main objective of the cell is to tackle the piracy in the Telugu film industry.

The objectives of TIPCU are here:

1. Bridge communication between stakeholders and expedite necessary interventions for copyright
enforcement in the Media and Entertainment sector.

2. Function as a specialized copyright enforcement unit to measure, record and gather intelligence
on criminal syndicates.

3. Expedite Investigation and Prosecution.

4. Initiate Site Blocking Actions.

5. Disrupt Funding to Infringing sites.

6. User Level Deterrence

Minister for Municipal Administration & Urban Development, Industries, Mining, Information Technology & NRI Affairs, KTR took to his micro-blogging site Twitter and wrote, “First initiative in the country against piracy by our Telangana Govt. Game changer in my opinion.”

Reacting to the same, an acclaimed movie maker Shobu Yarlagadda, who produced SS Rajamouli’s “Baahubali”, also tweeted, “Thank you @KTRTRS for spearheading this much needed initiative! Hope TIPCU will make the right impact and set an example for other states.”
