On Monday, the BJP Government in Rajasthan led by Vasundhara Raje decided to table the Criminal Laws (Rajasthan Amendment) Bill in the state Assembly.
This bill intends to amend the Criminal Code of Procedure, 1973. It also plans to bar the media from naming government officials till the Rajasthan government allows the case to be investigated.
Rajasthan Home Minister Gulab Chand Kataria introduced the bill as the Congress walked out of the Assembly.
Not only did Congress protest the bill but also senior BJP leader Ghanshyam Tiwari was also against it.
Congress leader Rameshwar Dudi said, “We will oppose the bill. This will protect corrupt officials.”
The bill mainly focuses on not allowing the court to order an investigation against any government official. The reason given for this amendment is in respect to the officials who served the country.
The second part of the bill focuses on the media restrictions. It states the media will be prohibited from reporting on any of these cases until a sanction is given from the Rajasthan government.
It concludes with the punishment for those who break the conditions of the bill. Those who violate the bill will be imprisoned for up to 2 years.
