The Central government has declared there would be a 10 percent customs duty on mobile phones. This includes the parts like charger, headsets, USB Cable and battery. This is an attempt to improve domestic manufacturing and will be implemented with immediate effect.

According to an official statement, the 10 percent customs duty tax will be imposed on all imported mobile phones and other accessories like wire headsets, batteries, chargers, microphones and receivers, keypads, USB and other electronic goods.

Some of the parts exempted from customs duty tax are specified parts of mobile phones, including camera module, printed circuit board assembly (PCBA,) connectors display assembly, cover glass assembly, touch panel, ringer and vibrator motor.

The government in their notice has made it clear that this is an attempt to increase mobile phone manufacturing in India. The statement also said inputs and raw material for the manufacture of parts for the electronic goods, which includes mobile phones will be exempted from the basic customs duty.
